We have numerous images in many media; paintings, both oil and water colour, drawings, etchings, lithographs, prints, postcards and photos galore. It is not yet practical to have them all on line but we are working on it. Meanwhile here is a selection to whet your appetite.
We are lucky. Malmesbury is such a beautiful place that artists have been drawn here. In the late eighteenth century picturesque ruins were the ‘in’ thing. J M W Turner and Thomas Girtin came here together in 1791 and again in 1797. The abbey and town provide a fertile field. Two and a half centuries earlier Leland in his travels around England as the King’s Antiquary visited Malmesbury and painted vivid word images of what he saw. John Betjeman, the twentieth century poet enthused over the town. So do we; we hope you will enjoy looking at these portrayals of our town.
Our collection has been greatly enlarged and enhanced by the generous donation by the Hatchwell family of their collection of pictures.
We shall continue to add more pictures as time goes by.
