  • We are delighted to welcome a coin expert from Noonans’- the premier rare coin dealers in London.
  • Also a representative from the British Library.
  • The curator of Athelstan’s sword from the Ashmolean in Oxford is also hoping to be there – we are just awaiting confirmation.
  • During our Private Preview drinks reception each of these experts will take small groups across to the Museum and discuss their respective items

This is a wonderful opportunity to see the Abingdon Sword on loan from the
Ashmolean Museum Oxford; an important manuscript signed by Athelstan
from the British Library and a rare pair of seals from the Victoria & Albert
Museum. There will also be a superb collection of rare coins relating
to the King, his forebears and his descendants on loan from some of London’s
premier rare coin dealers.

The Athelstan 1100 Exhibition will be held in the Museum and will be open to the public from
2nd July to 29th September 2024.
Malmesbury is celebrating the 1100th anniversary of Athelstan’s accession as
king of England who is buried in the Abbey grounds. We have assembled an
important group of objects and visual displays to celebrate his association
with the town.

There are also new information boards and new tablets offering enhance pictorial and contextual information in the Museum.

Hannah Twynnoy is possibly the first person to be killed by a tiger in England, but why was this possible? What happened to cause her death?
